The Push For Information: Connecting Through Notifications

In the era of instant gratification, where we have immediate access to information, the way that people interact with their devices is changing. Looking back, users have been forced to search out the information that is relevant to them – often times diving deep into an internet search to find what they are looking for.

Now, the smartphone has become the major gateway to information, a trend that will only continue to grow. This is why Hooks is focused on delivering the timely, relevant information directly to our users through push notifications. In this way we are able to satisfy our users immediate need for information, as well as create an engaging user experience.

Smart businesses need to recognize and implement this new model of customer communication, delivering on the news that users want pushed to them. This begs the question, what information is that? Here is what we’ve learned from sending 2 million notifications a day to our 300,000 users.

The Demand For Push Notifications Continues to Grow

As you can see the demand for push notifications since the launch of Hooks in March has more than tripled, from 110,932 notifications in March to 1,462,386 notifications in January. What does this mean? As users become more accustomed to receiving information immediately through push, they expanded the areas of information that Hooks delivers to them.

Sending Notifications That Users Want To Receive

Above is the breakdown of Hooks’ most used notification segments, with TV/Movies in the lead, followed closely by news, weather and sports. What would these notifications look like on the Hooks platform?

It could be a reminder from our TV and Movie category, set with our TV Show Episode Airs alert, reminding you about the starting time of The Walking Dead. It could be news update using our RSS Feed hook. This time of year you may need a weather alert, perhaps a Rain Alert, keeping you prepared for the day. If you are a sports fan, it could be a sports alert set up with our Soccer Results hook, making sure you know who won the latest game.

While the most popular hooks are entertainment based, there are many ways to use push notifications in business, which we are seeing build within our user base. In fact, I recently shared my favorite business life hacks from Hooks, which includes tracking product reviews, brand mentions, keywords, social media conversation and more.

The future of user engagement is here – the push notification. In fact, we have seen that once an alert is created in Hooks it is rarely deleted, showing that users are engaging with the information that interest them through our platform. As we move forward businesses will need to master delivering users the information that they need and want through timely, targeted pushes.

The takeaway? Businesses must recognize the shift in users preferences and adjust their communication models to offer the pushes the users want. To do this effectively they must consider the following factors:

  1. Relevant news
  2. Timely delivery
  3. Entertainment value
  4. Useful application
  5. Safety alerts

To create an effective push notification businesses should include at least two of these five factors. For example, a timely delivery which alerts users to a nearby earthquake, or a relevant news alert sharing a recent round of industry funding.
